The Story of The Old Lady Who Crossed The Ocean…
There once was a little old lady who wanted to cross the ocean on a cruise ship.
She saved up all of her money and bought herself some cheap Wonder Bread and little cans of tuna to sustain her on her voyage.
She was able to save up enough money to barely afford the cheapest ticket on the cruise. And because she hardly had any money left over, she kept her cans of tuna fish and loaves of Wonder Bread close to her and rationed her food as she crossed the ocean.
She stayed in her cabin for the entire voyage.
At one point, she began to fear that her rations would run out.
And if she ran out of tuna fish and Wonder Bread, she would starve and might not survive the voyage! Finally, the cruise ship crossed the ocean, and when she opened the door to her cabin, right outside her quarters was a big, delicious buffet.
This buffet was abundantly stocked with cheese platters, fruit platters, vegetable platters, roast meats, sweetbreads, chocolate fountains, absolutely any food that the heart would desire.
As she marveled at the abundance of food that had been outside her cabin door all along, the buffet manager looked over at her and said:
“The buffet was included with your ticket madam… please help yourself!”
The moral of the story?
Just like this little old lady, we often never reach our full potential in life because we don’t have the right mindset. That is to say, our mindset often prevents us from seeing all the abundance around us… and instead we focus on scarcity.
I like this story because it relates to a tough period in my life.
I used to be like this old lady.
I often thought that I was not capable, not good enough, that I did not deserve anything better…
My mindset was holding me back in my tiny cabin… with my cans of tuna and Wonder bread.
Just like your skills, it’s not something you are born with but something you develop. In fact, not having the proper mindset is like driving a car with the handbrake on.
