It was a beautiful Friday afternoon at the end of January 2005.
The sun was shining, just like the other 350 days of the year in Sydney, Australia.
But there I was walking home with a strong sense of discouragement and disappointment.
You see, I had just been fired as a waiter for the second time in the last 2 weeks. And both for the same reason: my English and skills were too poor for the job.
On my way back, I stopped at a video store.
I rented a few old movies for $1 each. And while I was sadly walking back to my bedroom in the small apartment I was sharing with 3 other roommates in China Town….
I didn’t know that I was holding in my hands the $1 item that would change my life.
That movie was called ‘The Apartment.’ The main character played an executive that traveled around the world. He fascinated me and I told myself “This is it, that is what I will do in life.”
4 years later, after immigrating to Canada, working on a series of menial jobs and starting my company from scratch, I had officially done business in the 5 continents.
I was living my dream life.
As you saw in my story, it sometimes doesn’t take much to ignite the switch in your mind that will guide you to your ultimate lifestyle or dream in life.
It can be a movie, a video, a person we meet or even a book we read.
And so, this week…
I've Decided To Share And Summarize One Of My Favorite Business Books Ever And...
… I encourage you to read it.
It is called the Go-Giver
I think that I might have read it 5 or 6 times so it’s time to write a summary and share it with you.
The Go-Giver, A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea by Bob Burg and John David Mann, is a short fictional story that teaches the 5 Laws for Success and the power of giving.
The story follows the tale of a young business exec, Joe, as he struggles to find an account to meet his third quarter quota.
Why You Should Read This Book
This book sets the ground rules for how you can reach stratospheric success in business and tells you that being a go-giver is more beneficial than a go-getter. The book argues that the win-win, competitive business models are not necessarily the best ways to get results, stating that doing business from a point of generosity is a better approach.
5 Laws of Stratospheric Success:
#1 The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment
#2 The Law of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them
#3 The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first
#4 The Law of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself
#5 The Law of Receptivity: The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving
- When you base your relationships with people on who owes who what, you are not a friend.
- If you want more success, find a way to serve more people
- If you have a greater passion for what you are giving (product, service or idea) than for what you are getting – you will create great fortune.
- It’s important to network, but not network for customers or clients. Network for “personal walking ambassadors” – people who know you, like you and trust you. This generates referrals – people who are personally invested in seeing you succeed and Vice Versa.
- If you don’t put any focus on selfishness and greed, even if it’s all around you, it doesn’t have much impact on you.
5 Quotes From The Go Giver:
#1 “Every giving can happen only because it is also a receiving”
#2 “Watch out for what others need, with the faith that when you do, you’ll get what you need.”
#3 “Sometimes you feel foolish, even look foolish, but you do the thing anyway.”
#4 “Most people just laugh when they hear that the secret to success is giving….Then again, most people are nowhere near as successful as they wish they were.”
#5 “Most of us have grown up seeing the world as a place of limitation rather than as a place of inexhaustible treasures. A world of competition rather than one of co-creation.”
Book Summary
This is a story about a businessman at Clason-Hill Trust Corporation named Joe, who is trying to land a large account, one he needs to make his third quarter quota. However, Joe needed more clout and leverage to put a deal together for a client. He needs the leverage to win his client back. He decides to contact a big wheel consultant for Fortune 500 CEOs and sets up an appointment to meet with him.
The big wheel, named Pindar, decides to give his trade secret to Joe upon meeting with him. His secret to success is “giving.” Pindar offers to share his 5 laws for success with Joe over the course of one week, on condition that Joe implements each law on the day he learns about them.
As Pindar teaches Joe about his 5 laws for success throughout the week, he introduces Joe to a series of “go-givers”; first a restaurant owner, then a CEO of an educational technology company, a financial advisor, a real estate broker, and finally, the “Connector,” who happens to be an underestimated co-worker of Joe’s. Pindar and his colleagues teach Joe how to open up to the power of giving, and that if he changes his focus from getting to giving, he will see unexpected returns.
This book is jam-packed with a variety of lessons that can be applied to both business and life, such as:
• In order to be successful, you need to stop keeping score.
• You need to “watch out for the other guy.” The only winning proposition is 100%, not a 50-50 split.
• Influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first. If you watch out for what others need, you will get what you need in return.
• Your compensation is directly proportional to how many lives you touch.
• Success is not just about value, but also about how much impact you have.
• People will do business with and refer business to people they know, like and trust.
• And more!

— Rick LG
“You gotta read this book! Has the message been around for thousands of years? Sure. But this neat little book has a beautiful and simple way of teaching all of us the immense power in coming from a place of giving and helping our fellow man.
Is it a business book? Yup. But can it apply to changing the world for the better? Absolutely. One thing I learned from the book – is that if something is a true principle – then the application should work in the business world and on a personal level. Sure it’s sounds exciting to “crush the competition” and teach those other boys “a lesson they will never forget”.
But on a deep cellular level – it doesn’t feel right to talk like this. If we believe we are all one, living on this big rock together called Earth – do we really want to “crush” anyone? Maybe the only model we’ve ever been exposed to teaches us that “there ain’t enough to go around – so get yours before someone else does”. What a limited view.
Why not come from a place of abundance. That there is more than enough to go around. What about helping your competition to grow your business? What about putting other people’s interest before your own? Call it sowing the seeds, karma or what comes around goes around – but we have to start looking at life more from a place of co-operation versus competition. More from love than fear.
Anyways – grab the book today. It’s a light read (just a few hours) and actually you will not want to put the book down! If you actually implement the books timely advice – your life, your relationships and your business affairs will expand and grow. Grab the book today!”
